YaYa Chou
YaYa Chou's newest body of work in fruition since late 2007, is entitled "Soft Tissue". Her concept utilizes the Western medical terms to describe organ functionality and interaction, coupled with the Eastern medical philosophy in which organs bear emotions. She finds a parallel between organs, our life and social structures then re-interprets the meanings in humorous and bittersweet ways through drawings and installation inspired by anatomy illustrations of animals, plants and humans. The result is a collection of pieces that compel us to think differently about how we treat ourselves and others, and how we are all connected by sharing the same parts and emotions.
In 2006 we were pleased to present a 2 person show with Ya Ya featuring the now well-known Gummi Bear Chandelier, which has been in several national exhibitions and featured in numerous media coverage and reviews since that show. The work that evolved after the Chandelier centered around notions of class, domestication and art itself, including the Gummi Bear Rug (Simon) and other small gummi sculptures. Not only was the work luminous eye-candy, it was also an important juxtaposition between a very affordable mass consumed product & recognizably gauche domestic decoration. There is further symbolism in the use of the bear-shaped candy itself, in relation to the use of wild animals found in certain domestic settings such as trophies & served as symbols of Mans conquer of nature.
